Southampton captain Jose Fonte has heaped praise on Saints debutant Sam McQueen who once again impressed for Puel’s side as they took a point at Man City on Sunday.

The 21-year-old made his full Premier League debut at The Etihad, having come off the bench in the 3-1 win over Burnley the week before and starting at the San Siro against Inter Milan on Thursday.

The Southampton born youngster, who has been converted from a winger into a full-back under Claude Puel, has not looked out of place since coming into the side in the place of both Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett who have both suffered hamstring injuries.

McQueen made his first Saints appearance off the bench in the FA Cup two years ago.

And his captain admitted that he has been surprised by just how well he’s done:

“He’s surprised me. He’s done really, really well and fully deserves to be in the team now,” the European champion told the club’s media team.

“Well done to him,” he added. “Credit to him for the work he has done. I hope he can keep doing what he is doing.

“He needs to keep improving, because he’s been a very good surprise.

“We need him at the moment, we need to do everything for him to make sure he’s comfortable and confident.

“In the end, it’s only up to him and he’s done really, really well. It’s all credit to him.”

McQueen looks set to continue in the role has the Saints host Sunderland in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night before Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are the visitors on Sunday.
