Southampton chiefs are hoping to land a deal for free-agent Martin Caceres in the coming days, in order for him to join the squad on their pre-Wembley training camp, according to reports from the Daily Echo.
The club had hoped to announce the signing of the defender on Monday, however, they delayed the deal as the 29-year-old had to travel back to Uruguay in the wake of the shock death of his brother.
The former Barcelona and Juventus man, who was at the club’s Staplewood training ground for a medical last week, is being brought in as cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk, after no defender was added in January to replace Jose Fonte, who left to join West Ham.
Claude Puel and his playing staff will travel to Spain on Friday for an intense trip, including double training sessions, as they look to stay match fit ahead of their EFL Cup final clash with Manchester United, who have three games to navigate before Wembley, at the end of the month.
The Saints hierarchy, who have had to wait over a work permit for Caceres, are hoping to have him in place to join his new teammates on the continent.
