Southampton have made contact with Serie A side Napoli over a deal for striker Manolo Gabbiadini, according to reporter Tancredi Palmeri.
The Saints, who have been struggling in front of goal this season with just 19 goals in 20 games, are currently without top scorer Charlie Austin, who is sidelined after surgery on his shoulder, having picked up an injury in the Europa League clash with Harpoel Be’er Sheva.
A deal for Gabbiadini, who has three goals under his belt this season, will reportedly break the Saints’ £16m record transfer fee, set when they signed Morocco international Sofiane Boufal this summer.
According to reports St. Mary’s boss Claude Puel, who watched his side pick up zero points from their last three Premier League games, scoring just twice, is plotting a £17m swoop for the striker.
The Saints currently have Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez as their striking options who, despite having both found the net in the last month, are well off form at the moment.
