Premier League champions Manchester City suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat against title-chasing Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.

City went into the match knowing that victory would move them to within three points of the Gunners, but they fell behind early on when Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard fired home from close range.

Erling Haaland drew the visitors level after the break, but Arsenal were back in front within a minute when Thomas Partey’s shot was deflected past Stefan Ortega.

Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly then extended the hosts’ advantage, before late goals from Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri capped off a fine victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The defeat leaves City 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game-in-hand over their closest rivals.

Guardiola has already bolstered his squad during the current transfer window, but now it appears that City are eyeing further new signings and they may have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of a midfielder.

According to TBR Football, Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez has told the Portuguese side that he wants to join Man City this month.

Guardiola has been without key midfielder Rodri for much of the current campaign

Gonzalez, 23, is a target for City and the report claims that the Premier League champions have held talks about a potential move for the player.

It is also claimed that the Citizens are considering paying the player’s £50.1 million release clause to sign him this month.

The Argentina international usually plays as a defensive midfielder but can also be deployed in more advanced roles.

The former Spain Under-21 international joined Porto from Spanish giants Barcelona in 2023, having previously spent time at Valencia.

He has since played 68 times for the Portuguese side across all competitions, but the report claims that City have already agreed personal terms with the player and could make a late move to sign him before Monday’s 11pm deadline.

City’s need for reinforcements in midfield stems from the fact that influential midfielder Rodri remains a long-term absentee, having suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Arsenal in September.
