Liverpool will hope to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table when they face Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

The Reds currently sit 11 points clear at the top of the standings and could even extend that advantage if they are victorious and second-placed Arsenal fail to beat high-flying Nottingham Forest.

Manager Arne Slot is enjoying a sensational debut season in England football, with his side also in the final of the Carabao Cup and in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Despite that, this summer could be one of significant change at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all approaching the expiries of their respective contracts.

Now, though, it appears that another of Liverpool’s biggest stars is also attracting interest from overseas.

According to CaughtOffside, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have their sights set on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

The 25-year-old has been inconsistent ever since joining the Reds from Portuguese side Benfica in 2022, and he has missed a number of chances so far this term.

Nunez has missed several big chances this season

In total the Uruguay international has scored 39 goals and provided 22 assists in 131 matches for the Merseyside outfit across all competitions, but the report claims that Liverpool are open to the idea of selling the player when the transfer window reopens this summer.

He has netted just six times in 35 games so far this season, and has fallen largely out of favour under Slot having started just seven of Liverpool’s 27 Premier League games so far.

The Uruguayan is under contract at Anfield until the end of the 2027/28 campaign, but the report suggests that Atletico may look to lure him to the Spanish capital this summer amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Antoine Griezmann.

Atletico are said to be also considering moves for Crystal Palace’s Jean-Phillipe Mateta, and Wolves forward Fabio Silva, who is currently on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas.
