England manager Gareth Southgate will have to cut seven players from his squad after the Three Lions’ two friendlies next week.

The former Middlesbrough boss recently named an initial 33-man preliminary squad for this summer’s European Championships in Germany but, after games against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iceland, Southgate will have to reduce his squad to 26 players.

While a number of players are almost certain to be involved at the tournament in Germany, several others are on the fringes of the squad and will hope to impress next week in order to give themselves the best possible chance of being included.

Southgate is likely to only take one striker along with captain Harry Kane, suggesting that one of either Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins will miss out on a place in the final squad.

Watkins is arguably more likely to be included after a remarkable season for Aston Villa, but it appears that Toney could be in line for a big move this summer.

As per Football Insider, the Brentford striker is a target for Tottenham this summer.

Toney could leave Brentford this summer

The report claims that the Bees could look to cash in on the Englishman when the transfer window opens, and Spurs are likely to be one of the club interested in signing him.

Toney, 28, joined Brentford from Peterborough United back in 2020 and has since played more than 140 times for Thomas Frank’s side, scoring 72 goals.

Last year he served a nine-month ban for breaching FA betting rules and, after scoring four goals in his first five matches back, the striker then failed to score in any of his final 12 games of the season.

It had initially been suggested that Brentford were holding out for a fee in the region of £100 million for Toney, but the report claims that the club’s valuation has since dropped significantly and £40 million could now be enough to lure him away from Brentford.
