Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to maintain top spot in the Premier League when they host rivals Chelsea on Monday evening.

The Lilywhites currently sit two points clear of North London rivals Arsenal, who could leapfrog Ange Postecoglou’s side with a win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have endured a difficult start to the season and currently sit 11h in the top flight table.

It appears that Spurs may not have had the perfect build up to the game, though, with one of their most experienced players reportedly wanting to leave.

According to Football Insider, defender Eric Dier is keen to leave the club after a breakdown in talks over a new contract.

The England international joined Tottenham back in 2014 and has made a total of 360 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Dier is yet to feature for Tottenham so far this term

He has fallen out of favour since the arrival of Postecoglou over the summer, though, and is yet to make an appearance under the Australian.

The report claims that the defender is now intent on leaving Tottenham after a breakdown in contract negotiations.

Crucially, though, it is claimed that Dier wishes to leave the club as a free agent next summer, as opposed to being sold in the January transfer window.

Tottenham would be willing to listen to bids for the player when the window reopens in the new year, but Dier himself would rather wait until the summer when he would likely have more options available to him.

The 30-year-old has failed to make the match squad for more than half of Spurs’ games so far this term, with Postecoglou favouring Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in central defence.

His current contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and it appears that he will depart North London after almost a decade with the club.
