Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes Manchester United will be competing for the Premier League title next season.

The 36-year-old, who starred for the Red Devils’ rivals between 1998 and 2015, was speaking exclusively to BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Brom, in which Jose Mourinho’s men prevailed 2-0 victors.

He said, “Everyone knows that they have had a difficult few years before, but Jose has come in and as Glenn [Hoddle] says, slowly but surely, they are moving forward.

“They are getting a settled team. There are a lot of players within the eleven that are playing very well and the bench looks strong as well.

“Jose has made three or four really big signings as he has come in, they are settling in and doing well.

“It seems to me as if they are only a few more pieces away from the jigsaw that will make them compete again at the top.”

Gerrard added, “I think next year Manchester United will compete for the title.

“This year, they have maybe left themselves a little bit much to do.

“But they are certainly moving forward and playing an awful lot better than they did previous years.”

Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, and face Sunderland at Old Trafford on Boxing Day (December 26).
