Stoke City are prepared to hijack Southampton’s move for defender Virgil van Dijk.
It is thought Saints’ move for the Dutch centre-half is all but tied up once the Scottish Premiership champions play out their UEFA Champions League fate, but it seems the Potters are plotting to throw a spanner into the works at the last hurdle.
The 24-year-old, who arrived at Celtic Park from Netherlands outfit FC Groningen over two years ago, scored an impressive 10 goals in 58 appearances in all competitions for Ronny Deila’s side last season.
Last term’s performances, plus this campaign’s displays so far, have clearly caught the eye of Stoke manager Mark Hughes, who is mulling over a last-ditch bid for the Celtic ace.
It is also thought that fellow Premier League rivals Everton could weigh in with a late move for Van Dijk if England defender John Stones completes a move to Chelsea before the close of the transfer window.
