Captaining your club or country is one of the highest honours a football player can be afforded.

Individuals who don the iconic armband are perhaps the most important facets within any team.

It is a role requiring immense leadership, responsibility, and of course quality – lots of it.

The captain is not necessarily the best player in the team, but they are the ones that players and supporters turn to when times are tough.

They are the ones who lift the trophies at the end of a season or competition, lead the team onto the pitch, and they are the main point of call for referees and managers.

What an honour it would be to be afforded the role of captain or vice captain, but imagine what it would be like if your team mates voted to demote you from this prestigious responsibility.

And according to The Sun, Manchester City players have demoted Kevin De Bruyne from the vice-captain to the fourth choice skipper.

Kevin De Bruyne has been demoted from the vice-captaincy position

The classy midfielder often wore the armband for City last season, when current club captain Fernandinho was not on the pitch.

However, it is understood City players voted to name Ilkay Gundogan as vice-captain, with Ruben Dias named as the third choice captain.

This means De Bruyne has fallen behind two players in the reigning champions’ captain pecking order.

It is quite the decision from Pep Guardiola’s side, and while the Belgian is not said to be angry or upset, it would take a mind of steel to not be slightly insulted by a decision like this.

The 30-year-old has spent six seasons at the Etihad Stadium, contributing 67 goals and 107 assists in 264 appearances, since arriving from Wolfsburg for £54million.
