The term ‘must win game’ is one we hear so often in football its overuse has more or less rendered it completely meaningless but there is the odd occasion where it seems glaringly apt, one such time being this weekend’s clash between Watford and Sunderland, where David Moyes side desperately needed a win at Vicarage Road but instead left there empty handed following another demoralising defeat, one which makes you wonder just how the former Preston North End, Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad boss can possibly turn things around.

Miguel Britos header which gave the Hornets all three points may well be looked back upon as the straw which broke Sunderland’s back as Moyes’ team have endured a run that’s seen them take just six points from the last possible 30 and seem destined to be spending next season in the Championship barring a miracle.

In their defence if there’s one team that knows about great escapes then it’s Sunderland who’ve made it an almost annual event.

This time however the odds seem too heavily stacked against them as they sit seven points from safety, to add insult to injury Newcastle United look on course to return to the Premier League next season.

Here’s how Sunderland fans reacted to this weekend’s defeat:
