Aberdeen are expecting an approach from Sunderland to speak to Derek McInnes.

According to a report in the local Evening Express the Aberdeen board are expecting to hear from Sunderland chief Martin Bain this week.

McInnes is currently on a family holiday but is bound to be keen to speak to Sunderland about the vacancy created by the departure of Davie Moyes.

Former Rangers chief executive Bain is well aware of McInnes’ managerial track and has enlisted the help of Walter Smith in identifying Sunderland’s next manager, earlier this year Smith told Rangers that they should have brought in McInnes to replace Mark Warburton.

McInnes had a brief spell in charge of Bristol City and has ambitions to prove himself in England.

In normal circumstances he’d be expected to jump at the Sunderland job but with debts of over £100m and other financial issues it’s not a guarantee that he’d say yes if offered the job.
