Sunderland have taken Nigeria international forward Chinedu Obasi on trial.

The rock-bottom Premier League club, who have only picked up three points from their opening nine league games, are considering their options in the Bosman market to bolster their attacking options.

The 29-year-old, who has 26 international caps to his name, last left Bundesliga outfit Schalke towards the end of last season, for whom he joined for £4m from Hoffenheim back in 2012.

New Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce is thought to be eager on bringing in a new striker to the Stadium of Light before the opening of the January transfer window.

“The agent who got hold of me said he’s worth having a look at, based on his CV, which looked pretty good,” he said.

“We’ll make a judgement next week.”
