Name: Patrick van Aanholt
It’s quite hard to highlight any Sunderland players who have really improved on the performances they put in last year.
The Black Cats are struggling again at the wrong end of the table and the majority of their squad have performed similarly, or worst, than last term.
However, one player who does deserve a bit of credit for his progression of late is Patrick van Aanholt.
Often caught out in the past for lapses in concentration or simply just being caught out of position, the 25-year-old has improved in recent weeks under Sam Allardyce.
The Dutchman had a shocker in the 6-2 defeat at Everton but, since that day, he has started to look a lot more assured defensively and a threat going forward, especially when used as a wing-back.
The ex-Chelsea man has scored two Premier League goals (two more than last season), created 15 chances and has won more defensive duels than the whole of last term.
