Name: Jermain Defoe
Just like the back end of the previous campaign; a large weight of Sunderland’s survival bid with fall upon star striker Jermain Defoe’s shoulders. But by February’s account, it seems the former England international is ready to fire the Black Cats towards Premier League safety once again.
The 33-year-old, who has 55 international caps to his name, took his league goalscoring tally to ten last month after helping Sunderland scrape out of the top-flight’s bottom three.
Defoe, who arrived at the Stadium of Light from Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC only last January, bagged Sam Allardyce’s side a pivotal point in their bid for safety by netting a 89th minute equaliser at Anfield to pin back Liverpool to a last-gasp 2-2 draw.
However; Sunderland’s most celebrated result last month was their wonderful 2-1 home win over giants Manchester United, with the experienced Defoe once again proving a real handful for the Red Devils’ makeshift defence and was ultimately unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet.
