Defoe’s goals could be the key to Sunderland’s survival this season.

In a month where Jermain Defoe scored five goals, and Patrick van Aanholt netted twice, with two more of his efforts deflected into the net for own goals, as well as picking up another assist, it is a difficult choice between the two for who should be Sunderland’s Player of the Month.

However, when we look at the times the goals were scored in the matches and how crucial they could prove to be come the end of the season, we have just sided with the former England international striker.

The Black Cats pulled themselves within four points of safety as they beat bottom of the table Aston Villa 3-1 at the start of the month, with Defoe scoring the decisive goals, before the 33-year-old added a hat-trick in the next match against fellow strugglers Swansea – a 4-2 win that lifted Sam Allardyce’s men to within one point of the Swans.
