It is that time of the season when Sunderland need wins if they are to get themselves out of trouble and avoid relegation to the Championship, but despite going unbeaten in their three matches in March, they failed to pick up a victory.

They will especially kick themselves in the final two fixtures of the month, where they held leads in the games at Southampton and arch-rivals Newcastle, before eventually drawing both.

While the results may have been disappointing, Jermain Defoe’s form certainly wasn’t. The former England international assisted Dame N’Doye’s opener in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light, before netting at St Mary’s and St James’ Park, where the Black Cats were denied a seventh successive win in the Tyne-Wear derby by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s second half equaliser.
