Swansea City have rejected a £10 million bid from Everton for captain Ashley Williams, according to BBC Sport.

The Wales international was understood to be close to agreeing terms on a move to Goodison Park, but it appears as though Ronald Koeman’s side will have to raise their initial bid in order to complete a deal for the 31-year-old defender, as they look for a replacement for John Stones, who is said to be on the verge of joining Manchester City.

A spokesman from the Swans said: “We are not looking to sell him and therefore we have turned down the offer currently on the table.”

Williams, who led his national team to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 earlier this summer, where they were beaten by the eventual winners, Portugal, has two years left on his current deal at the Liberty Stadium.

The centre-back has made more than 300 appearances for the Welsh club since joining them from Stockport in 2008.
