Liverpool have reportedly missed out on signing France Under-20 international defender Theo Hernandez this summer, according to the Independent.

The Premier League side, who drew 0-0 against Southampton at the weekend, although they kept hold of third spot in the top-flight standings, have been continually linked with a move for the Atletico Madrid left-back ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

The 19-year-old, who has featured three times for France’s Under-20 squad, has scored one goal and provided four assists in all competitions whilst on loan at fellow La Liga outfit Deportivo Alaves this season.

Hernandez, whose elder brother, Lucas, also plays for Atletico, is thought to be available for around €24m this summer due to a clause in his contract.

However, the report suggests that Spanish giants Real Madrid are firm favourites to land the French prospect after the player passed a medical.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was interested in Hernandez, having opted to field primary midfielder James Milner at left-back this season, with the German unconvinced by the performances of full-back Alberto Moreno at Anfield.
