These 2 Southampton youngsters could be the next Marcus Rashford

It was little over a year ago to the day that Marcus Rashford announced himself on the world stage for Manchester United.

The 19-year-old was a late replacement for the injured Anthony Martial against Midtjylland in their Europa League last-32 clash on February 25 2016, and made the most of his chance by firing home a brace to secure their place in the next round.

Three days later, the striker made Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up against Arsenal in the Premier League, and he continued to ride the wave with two goals in just three minutes to help the Red Devils to a vital 3-2 victory over Arsene Wenger’s Gunners.

That was exactly a year ago today, and since then Rashford has gone on to make his debut for the England team, in which he netted just three minutes into his international career against Australia in May 2016, and he has indeed scored the winner in a Manchester derby.

Life completely changed for Rashford in those few days a year ago, so who could be the next young star ready to seize their chance in the first team should it come along?

Well, we took a look at Southampton’s pool of young talent, and identified TWO forwards who could be the next Rashford…

Siph Mdlalose

18-year-old Siph Mdlalose joined Southampton at the age of 11, and is fast developing into a very capable forward player.

The South African has this term played for both the Under 18s and the Under 23s, appearing four times for the latter in Premier League 2, where the Saints currently sit ninth in Division One, as well as in their EFL Trophy campaign, where he scored the second from a Josh Sims cross in their group stage win over Crawley Town back in September.

However, it’s for the Under 18s where he has impressed this season, netting four goals in 15 appearances for the team, helping them to ninth place in the South division as well as starting their last two wins over Swansea and Brighton.

Clearly, Mdlalose has got enormous potential, and could well go on and become a first team player for Southampton in the next few years.

Olufela Olomola

Olufela Olomola has already made his senior debut for Southampton, as he came on as a 26th-minute substitute for Jay Rodriguez in their League Cup win over Sunderland back in October.

The 19-year-old has also twice been named as a substitute in the Premier League for the Saints, in their draw with Leicester and defeat to Chelsea also in October, but it has been in Premier League 2 where he has really shone.

Olomola has scored six goals in just 12 games for the Under 23s this term, including braces against both Liverpool and Leicester, to help them to ninth place in Division One.

The former Arsenal youngster clearly has bags of potential, and the fact that he has already got close to the Southampton first team bodes well for his future prospects at St Mary’s.
