Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would have been hoping for more than just five Premier League wins from his opening 13 matches in charge of the club.

The Red Devils have struggled for consistency in the league this season – this all after winning their first three matches – and have won just two of their last ten league games.

Their 1-1 draw at home to West Ham on Sunday was their fourth successive draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League, with Stoke, Burnley, and Arsenal all leaving the North West with a share of the spoils.

Although the performances have improved under Mourinho, United are sixth in the Premier League table, and already trail league leaders Chelsea by 11 points, and fourth place Arsenal by eight.

They go into this evening’s League Cup quarter-final against West Ham hopeful of making it to the last four of a competition they haven’t won for six years, and it’s a competition that, when Mourinho has won it in the past, has proved to be a springboard for further success.

Nevertheless, the United squad still looks short on the quality required to challenge for the title, so Mourinho may already be thinking about how he can improve his side when the transfer window reopens in January.

Thus, here are the THREE star signings that top United’s Christmas list…

Jose Gimenez

With Eric Bailly not quite match fit after injury and clear uncertainty over Chris Smalling’s future under Mourinho, the Portuguese boss may look to reinforce his backline.

He has had to mix and match at the back this season, with the recently out of favour Phil Jones partnering Marcos Rojo at centre-back in their last four Premier League games, so Mourinho will likely want more options at his disposal.

One name he has touted as a potential centre-back partner to Bailly is Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez, who lost his place to Stefan Savic at the end of last season.

Nevertheless, the 21-year-old had a superb breakthrough season in the Spanish capital, appearing 38 times in all competitions and striking up a solid partnership with fellow centre-half Diego Godin.

Mourinho is reportedly hopeful of concluding a deal for the Uruguayan international, who has made just four appearances for Diego Simeone’s side this season.

Isco

Another player who may leave the Spanish capital is 24-year-old playmaker Isco, who has seen first team opportunities hard to come by at Real Madrid this season.

The Spanish international was back on the bench for Madrid’s 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon last weekend, this all after a decent run in the first team.

Nevertheless, it looks unlikely that the young midfielder will sign a new deal at the Bernabeu, and this has alerted plenty of Premier League clubs to his availability.

United have also been linked with Willian and John Obi Mikel of Chelsea, but Isco’s versatility would help the Red Devils as they have struggled in both the defensive midfield department and the more attacking central role this season.

Antoine Griezmann

32 goals in 54 games last season, and then a further six at last summer’s European Championships, Antoine Griezmann is a man in demand.

The Frenchman has been one of the best forwards in the world in the last few seasons, and has scored 66 goals for Atletico Madrid since moving there in 2014.

However, he parted company with his agent in September and, with the uncertainty surrounding manager Diego Simeone’s future at the Spanish club, there are doubts about Griezmann’s long-term future.

Eight goals in 15 games for France this year and nine goals in 17 matches for Atletico this season demonstrates a forward who remains at the peak of his game, and with United having held a long-term interest in the 25-year-old, Mourinho could use Griezmann’s friendship with Paul Pogba to try and strike a deal in January.
