There were a few raised eyebrows when Conte brought defender Marcos Alonso to Chelsea last summer, but any doubts have since been abolished such have been the Spaniard’s excellent displays.

The 26-year-old, formerly of Real Madrid and Bolton Wanderers, has made the left wing-back spot his own this term after a string of impressive performances, both in the attacking sense and the defensive aspect of the game.

Four goals and two assists are demonstrative of his increasing prevalence in the attacking third, and his relentless energy up and down the flanks is a huge asset to Conte in the system the Italian plays.

With no obvious replacement for Alonso, it’s crucial that the 26-year-old remains in form and fully fit between now and May.
