It was seen by many as a panic buy at the end of the transfer window, but Chelsea bringing David Luiz back from Paris Saint-Germain last summer has been nothing short of a masterstroke.

The Brazilian international, who of course captained his country in their 7-1 mauling by Germany at their own World Cup three years ago, has been absolutely outstanding at the back for the Blues, starting 21 of their 25 Premier League games, and conceding just 14 goals while he has been on the pitch.

He has seamlessly taken to the role in the middle of Conte’s back three, and the responsibility of that has brought the best out of the 29-year-old, with exemplary displays against Southampton, Everton, and Liverpool demonstrative of his supreme confidence.

Obviously, Luiz’s form over the coming months will have a say in whether Chelsea win the title come May.
