Mourinho may well have got the decision to exclude Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the squad in the first few months of the season right, based on his recent form.

The Armenian captain made his first United start against neighbours City back in September, but clearly struggled and was replaced at half-time as Mourinho’s men lost 2-1.

Nonetheless, the 27-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Feyenoord in the Europa League last month, and produced a man-of-the-match display at Old Trafford as the hosts won 4-0.

And further man-of-the-match performances have followed against West Ham in the League Cup and against Zorya on Thursday, in which time Mkhitaryan set up two and netted his first United goal.

His recent form has been excellent, and he could be the creative spark that Mourinho’s men have missed at times this season.
