Watford are edging closer to signing Netherlands international goalkeeper Tim Krul, according to Pete O’Rourke.

The Premier League side, who currently sit 14th in the English top-flight standings having not won a league game since December 10, 2016, have been heavily linked with signing the Newcastle United shot stopper on loan before tonight’s 23:00pm deadline.

The 28-year-old, who has eight international caps for his country, has been loaned out to Eredivisie outfit Ajax this season, although the Dutchman has failed to make a first-team appearance so far.

Krul, who has also been loaned out to the likes of Falkirk and Carlisle United during his Magpies career, is wanted by Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri as goalkeeping cover after Costel Pantilimon, who has been ruled out for between three and four weeks after suffering an injury in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to League One side Millwall at the weekend.

The Netherlands international, who featured at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, has kept 53 clean sheets in 185 games overall for Championship club Newcastle.
