Arsenal went to Anfield without Patrick Vieira, who was injured at the time. A 13th minute goal from Harry Kewell put Liverpool ahead, but he would miss out on a chance to double the lead. Micheal Owen would also waste an easy opportunity.

The Reds were made to pay when Robert Pires’ free kick deflected against Sami Hyypia and ended up in the back of the Liverpool net. Arsenal went ahead in the second half, through another Pires effort, and snatched up all three of the points.
