Top 5: Bristol City managerial candidates

Bristol City sacked Steve Cotterill as their manager on Thursday night just eight months after he’s over seen a League One and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy double winning season.

Many supporters were deeply saddened by the decision but empathise with owner Steve Lansdown, who had a difficult decision to make with the Robins sitting in the bottom-three.

Unfortunately Cotterill was unable to maintain the momentum which saw the club finish on 99 points least term, winning just four of the opening 26 Championship games.

This hasn’t been the first case of the former Portsmouth man losing his job due to poor results in the second tier, which is becoming a level he can’t quite seem to get to grips with.

With the money spent on the development of Ashton Gate, which is nearing completion, coupled with Lansdown’s goal to bring Premier League football to the club, it’s vital City don’t make an immediate return to League One.

With that in mind and a serach for a new boss under way, Shoot takes a look at the leading candidates to replace Cotterill.

5. David Moyes

Moyes has been out of work since being sacked by Real Sociedad in November.

Many people will be surprised to see an ex-Manchester United manager linked with a managerial job at Bristol City, but what some people may not know is that he used to play for the Robins between 1985-87, making 83 appearances and netting six times.

Moyes therefore has an emotional link to the club and, with him currently out of work, it’s not one to completely rule out.

Yes it’s extremely unlikely, but what a coup it would be for City if they could convince the Scot to drop down to a Championship relegation battle.

something that would appeal to the Scot is the vision of the club and its directors. Couple that with the impending conclusion of the development of Ashton Gate, the 52-year-old could interpret this as an ideal platform to propel the club into the big time.
