4. Andros Townsend (Newcastle United)

Townsend earned his place in the England squad by impressing in his breakthrough season at Tottenham. However, a change of manager saw the exciting talent spend most of his time on the bench.

Townsend has scored one goal in six appearances for Newcastle after leaving Tottenham back in January.

Hodgson remained loyal with Townsend for the majority of the aforementioned qualifying campaign but eventually admitted that he could not continue to pick someone who was not playing regular first-team football.

Townsend; now at Newcastle, boasts an impressive record for the Three Lions but, with the Magpies enthralled in a relegation battle, his confidence seems to have taken a hit and that could cost him his place in the 23-man squad.
