Top 5: Premier League transfer targets from the 2018 FIFA World Cup

It is over! The 2018 FIFA World Cup finals are finished. I know, we cannot believe it either!

Many congratulations to France, who beat Croatia 4-2 in the final in Moscow on Sunday evening, whilst a massive thank you to Russia for hosting such a memorable tournament.

Tottenham Hotspur and England captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot award, after netting six goals for the Three Lions in Russia, whilst Croatia midfielder and ex-Spurs star Luka Modric won the Golden Ball award, after being named the player of the tournament.

Elsewhere, the likes of France’s Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann fully impressed, as well as Chelsea and Belgium winger Eden Hazard.

But everyone’s attention now turns back to domestic football, and with just 24 days to go until the new 2018-19 Premier League season, SHOOT has identified a number of players who starred at the World Cup and could be on the move to, or within, the Premier League this summer.

With the big guns, such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, looking to close the gap on defending champions Manchester City this term, whilst newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cardiff City and Fulham will be bidding to retain their top-flight status, star summer signings are what all clubs crave at this time of the year in order to achieve their forthcoming season objectives.

So, with the 2018 summer transfer window closing on Thursday, August 9 (17:00), the day before Manchester United kick-off the new season by welcoming Leicester City to Old Trafford on Friday night (20:00), here is SHOOT‘s Top 5 Premier League transfer targets following the 2018 FIFA World Cup…

Hirving Lozano (Mexico)

The Mexico left winger, 22, has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as La Liga champions FC Barcelona, after scoring one goal for his country this summer.

The PSV Eindhoven forward netted the only goal of the game against 2014 World Cup winners Germany in Mexico’s opening Group F fixture.

Lozano netted 19 goals and provided 11 assists in 34 appearances in all competitions for PSV last season.

Ante Rebić (Croatia)

Another transfer target for Manchester United is Croatia forward Ante Rebić.

The 24-year-old left winger scored one goal in six games for Croatia at the World Cup, who lost to France in the final on Sunday.

Rebić netted nine goals in 28 games for Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt last term, and is also reportedly being linked with transfers to Premier League sides Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as United this summer.

Harry Maguire (England)

A Premier League star already.

Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire was immense during England’s World Cup campaign, and scored the opening goal against Sweden in the quarter-finals, as the Three Lions finished fourth in the tournament on Saturday.

The 25-year-old defender scored two goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for Leicester last season, though the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been linked with mega money swoops for the Sheffield-born star ahead of the 2018-19 top-flight campaign.

Aleksandr Golovin (Russia)

Chelsea, Arsenal and Juventus have all been linked with moves for Russia’s key player of the finals, Aleksandr Golovin.

The 22-year-old impressed during the hosts’ run to the quarter-finals, before being knocked out by Croatia on penalties, as he scored one goal and set up two further strikes during Russia’s opening Group A thrashing of Saudi Arabia (5-0).

Golovin scored seven goals and provided six assists in 43 outings for CSKA Moscow last term.

Benjamin Pavard (France)

He is now a World Cup winner, so of course, why wouldn’t Premier League clubs be after France defender Benjamin Pavard?

The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes in all but one of the champions’ games in Russia this summer, and scored one of the goals of the tournament against Argentina in the last 16, as Didier Deschamps’ side defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final yesterday.

Pavard, who excelled at right-back for France, but is primarily a centre-back, played 36 times in all competitions for German outfit Stuttgart last season.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Napoli are all reportedly interested in snapping up the defender this summer.
