2. Incorrect decisions can have a big impact

There is a lot being discussed with regards to the poor standards of refereeing at the moment and it is the performances of incompetent officials that can have a big impact on the beautiful game. Graham Poll recently criticised the standard of officiating this season, condemning it as weak and not fit for purpose.

The most notable refereeing mistakes include: Frank Lampard’s strike against Germany in the 2010 World Cup not being given; the phantom ‘ghost goal’ in Reading’s 2-2 draw against Watford; the mistaken identity in the sending offs of Wes Brown, Kieran Gibbs and Gareth McAuley; and not forgetting the man himself, Graham Poll’s three yellow cards. This is without even mentioning Diego Maradona’s infamous ‘Hand of God’ in the 1986 World Cup…
