Before City’s rejuvenation and overhaul by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, the club flitted between the top two flights of English football, with one season in the third tier during 1998.

The 1995/96 season saw the team from the blue side of Manchester fail to win any of their first 11 games, taking just five points from their first 12 matches.

This win sparked a better run of form and a 2-2 home draw with third-placed Liverpool on the final day of the season looked to have secured their survival. But the two sides directly above them earned positive results, which condemned the club to relegation by goal difference after seven years in the top flight.
