Tottenham Hotspur travel north to face Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Lilywhites followed up a 1-1 opening weekend draw against Leicester City with a 4-0 win over Everton last weekend, and manager Ange Postecoglou will be keen to see his side replicate that performance when they face the Magpies on Saturday.

In the meantime, Spurs have reportedly agreed a deadline day deal for a defender.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the North London side have reached an agreement to have first refusal to sign Real Betis defensive midfielder Johnny Cardoso in the future.

He claims that, if Tottenham decide against a move for the player, they will be entitled to a sell-on clause.

Cardoso could join Tottenham in the future

Cardoso, 22, joined Betis from Brazilian club Internacional in January this year, and has since made 22 appearances for the club across all competitions.

He played more than 140 times at senior level during his time in Brazil, before moving to Spain earlier this year.

The player himself is said to have agreed to the deal, with the relevant documents now being finalised.

Cardoso is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play in the backline.

His current contract with Betis isn’t set to expire until the end of the 2028/29 season, but he could join Spurs prior to that date.
