Tottenham and West Ham are reportedly ready to go head-to-head in the race to sign Newcastle United attacking midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum, should the Magpies suffer relegation, according to the Brentwood Gazette via the Daily Express.

The Dutch international has impressed in his first season at St James’ Park despite his club’s troubles at the wrong end of the table, and is their top goalscorer in the Premier League with nine goals to his name – including a four-goal haul against Norwich City.

However, the Toon are three points from safety and Rafa Benitez faces an uphill task to keep the club up – if they were to fall down to the Championship, Wijnaldum would be one of the players looking to make a move back to the top flight.

And he wouldn’t have a shortage of suitors, with Spurs and the Hammers both registering their interest in the 24-year-old, and both teams in good positions to secure Champions League football next term.
