A 1-0 defeat against rivals Chelsea on Thursday night piled yet more pressure on Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou.

After a goalless first half, Blues captain Enzo Fernandez broke the deadlock with a fine header shortly after the break.

Spurs thought they had equalised through Papa Matar Sarr, but the Senegalese midfielder was judged to have fouled Moises Caicedo before firing past Robert Sanchez and the goal was therefore ruled out.

The result leaves Tottenham 14th in the Premier League table and closer in terms of points to the relegation zone than they are to fourth-placed Chelsea.

Postecoglou will be well aware that his side’s best chance of qualifying for European football next term will be by winning the Europa League this season, but the North London side face a tricky quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the meantime, it appears that Postecoglou has been dealt another blow with one of his key players attracting interest from a huge European club.

According to Football Insider, defender Cristian Romero could push for a move away from Tottenham this summer amid interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Romero is a target for Atletico Madrid

The report claims that the Argentine centre-back is keen to play in the Champions League and compete for silverware, something that he is unlikely to be able to do at Spurs any time soon.

Romero, 26, joined the Lilywhites on loan from Italian side Atalanta in 2021 and made his move to London permanent the following year.

In total he has now played 116 times for Tottenham across all competitions, forming an impressive partnership with Micky van de Ven at the heart of the backline.

The Argentina international is under contract at his current club until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, but the report suggests that he could push for a move away from the club if Atleti realise their interest and make an offer.
