After beginning the season with three victories and sitting top of the table before the first international break, Tottenham Hotspur’s season has taken a turn for the worse and looks to be following a worrying trend.

Nuno Esperito Santo’s side won each of their first three matches by a scoreline of 1-0, but have since lost 3-0 to both Crystal Palace and Chelsea and face Arsenal in a third consecutive London derby this weekend.

Perhaps more worrying than the results for Spurs fans, however, is the form of talismanic striker Harry Kane.

The England captain is yet to score a league goal this season and was heavily criticised for his performance against Chelsea on Sunday.

After a summer of being heavily linked with a move away from the club, the 28-year-old ultimately ended up staying in North London, but how long for remains to be seen.

Now, it appears that Spurs are already planning for a potential replacement for Kane.

According to The Express, the Lilywhites have emerged as surprise contenders for the signing of Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.

Martial failed to impress during a rare start on Wednesday evening

The striker has endured a difficult 12 months at Old Trafford, epitomised by his sub-par performance against West Ham on Wednesday evening during what was a rare opportunity to impress.

The Frenchman made an instant impact when he arrived at United from Monaco in 2015, scoring on his debut against Liverpool and adding two more goals on his full debut just days later.

However, having scored just six goals in 42 games since the start of last season, the 25-year-old’s future at United is in serious doubt.

Spurs, however, are reportedly keen on bringing the player to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and even enquired about his availability during the summer.

It is also reported that Spurs are open to the possibility of a swap deal, possibly involving fellow Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele.

The midfielder was also reportedly keen on leaving his club over the summer, and was substituted early in the second half against Chelsea.

United have apparently expressed interest in signing Ndombele as a long-term replacement for Paul Pogba, who will be out of contract next summer.
