Tottenham made a long awaited return to the Premier League on Wednesday night as they hosted Ligue 1 leaders Monaco at Wembley Stadium, their home away from home this season with White Hart Lane having a reduced capacity.

Their London rivals, Arsenal had a Champions League spell at the national stadium between 1998 and 2000 and did not enjoy their time there, and if Spurs’ tie with Monaco is anything to go by then they may be set for the same fate.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 2-1 to the French outfit, falling down 2-0 with goals from Bernardo Silva and Lemar before Toby Alderweireld got one back in injury time at the end of the first half.

The North London side are in a tough group, but one that they should be able to qualify from, with CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen filling the other two spots in Group E, and the former Southampton boss will have wanted to be in the best position possible after the first round of games.

Excited to see their side back in Europe’s top competition, Spurs fans will also have wanted to see their side get the group stages off to a good start, however, they were not happy with what they saw, and began to dig out ‘their own’…

However, while some fans were quick to bemoan the performance, others took a step back and enjoyed and appreciated the spectacle…

As good as the Champions League anthem sounds ringing around Wembley, Pochettino’s side could have been spurred on to a win had they let Kyle Walker sing the sides out…
