Tottenham Hotspur will host Premier League champions Manchester City in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were beaten 1-0 by London rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday – marking their fourth defeat in just nine league matches so far this term.

That result left Spurs eighth in the top flight standings, and Postecoglou will expect to see his side improve as the season goes on.

The Australian may have identified the Carabao Cup as Tottenham’s most realistic opportunity for silverware this season, but facing City will be a daunting prospect for the North London side.

Off the field, it appears that one of Spurs’ attackers could leave the club next summer.

According to GiveMeSport, forward Timo Werner is likely to leave Tottenham when his loan spell expires at the end of the current campaign.

Werner is likely to leave Spurs when his loan spell expires next summer

The Germany international joined Spurs on loan from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in January this year, and he extended the deal until the end of the current season.

In total he has played 25 times for the Lilywhites, scoring twice and providing four assists.

The report suggests that Spurs are unlikely to make Werner’s move permanent as Postecoglou is instead keen to sign a new forward to bolster his attacking options.

Spurs have the option to sign the German for a fee of around £8.5 million, but the report suggests that they are unlikely to do so.

Werner, 28, has started just two of Tottenham’s nine league games so far this season, and the North London side are said to be actively scouring the market in search of alternative options in attack.

The former Chelsea attacker was part of the Blues’ squad that won the Champions League in 2021, and he has registered a combined 160 goals and assists in 213 games for Leipzig across two spells with the club.
