Tottenham Hotspur will begin their new Premier League campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Leicester City on 19 August.

The Lilywhites finished fifth last season in Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign in charge, despite an impressive start that saw Spurs top the table after ten matches.

The Australian will likely want to bolster his squad this summer in an effort to improve next term, and it appears that the North London outfit have taken the lead in the race to sign a USA international.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have overtaken Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the race to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The report claims that the Villans had initially hoped to agree a swap deal for McKennie and his Juventus teammate Samuel Iling-Junior, with Douglas Luiz set to move to Turin.

McKennie could be on his way back to the Premier League this summer

Villa were also set to receive £20 million as part of the deal, such is their value of Brazilian midfielder Luiz.

Talks over that proposed deal have stalled, though, allowing other clubs the opportunity to move for the American.

With that in mind, Spurs are now hoping to agree a £15 million deal for the 25-year-old, who will soon enter the final year of his current contract with the Italian giants.

McKennie joined Juventus from Schalke in 2021, having spent the previous year on loan from the German side.

He spent six months on loan at Leeds United last year, but returned to Turin last summer and played 38 appearances for Juventus last term, providing ten assists.

The midfielder is expected to depart the club this summer, though, and Spurs are hoping to sign the 53-time USA international.
