Forward Anthony Martial is another who has come in for criticism from Mourinho this term, and doesn’t really look like the player that announced himself in English football last season with 17 goals in 49 games.

The France international was brilliant for United under Louis van Gaal but has struggled under Mourinho, and you wonder whether he, like Shaw, has a long-term future under the Portuguese at Old Trafford.

And if the answer is no, Pochettino should consider a move for the 21-year-old this summer given his own track-record of giving youngsters a chance, and the need for Spurs to baulk out their squad ahead of next season.

Besides the first team, the main criticism labelled at Spurs is their lack of depth, yet bringing in someone like Martial would not only strengthen the squad, but also make the attacking positions competitive ahead of a crucial season for the North London side.
