Aston Villa face competition from Watford for the signing of Sam Johnstone.

According to a report in the Birmingham Mail the Premier League outfit have entered the race to sign up the Manchester United keeper.

Johnstone played 22 games after joining Villa on loan in January with Steve Bruce already in talks with Jose Mourinho about making the move permanent.

The 24-year-old has got great experience from a number of loans but doesn’t figure in United’s future plans despite the question mark over the future of David de Gea.

With a year left on his contract United will be looking to sell Johnstone this summer with Villa likely to suggest a sell-on clause to make their offer more attractive.

Bruce is looking to complete a number of deals with the goalkeeping position criticial if he is to create a squad capable of challenging for promotion after failing to get into contention in the season just ended.
