Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is set to snub offers from Liverpool and Manchester City in order to remain on the south coast with the Saints, according to reports from the Daily Star.
The former Celtic man, who signed a six-year-deal at the club, has been a standout performer since he arrived to fill the whole left by now-Tottenham defender, Toby Alderweireld.
His sterling performances have turned heads at the top of the Premier League, with those in the top six circling ahead of a summer deal.
However, with former captain Jose Fonte having joined West Ham, the Dutchman has been given the first team captaincy.
A stipulation, according to a source of the Star’s, in the agreement to make him skipper was that he agreed to stay on and lead the side until the end of next season, at least.
The news will be welcome to Saints fans who, in the midst of a defensive crisis and a slump in for, will be glad of the 25-year-old’s commitment.
