Watford are reportedly closing in on the signing of Spain international Mario Suarez.

The newly-promoted Premier League side, who lost 2-1 against Manchester City at the weekend, have turned their attentions towards the Fiorentina midfielder after seemingly missing out on Atletico Madrid’s Thomas earlier this month.

The 28-year-old, who has three international caps for the defending European champions, has scored one goal in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit this season.

Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores is keen on bringing Suarez, who started his career at Atletico Madrid, to Vicarage Road in January after working with him at his boyhood club.

It is understood that the agreement is set to be an initial loan deal, with the option of Watford making the switch permanent in the summer for around £6.5m
