A dejected Quique Flores shakes hands with Cathcart following defeat to Man City earlier this month.

When newly-promoted Watford brought in a number of defenders during the summer, such as Jose Holebas, Sebastian Prodl, Miguel Britos and Allan Nyom, one of last season’s heroes – Craig Cathcart –  might have feared for his place in the starting XI.

However, the 26-year-old has played a part in every one of the Hornets’ 22 Premier League matches so far this term under new manager Quique Flores, helping the club keep eight clean sheets.

Of his team-mates, only Britos has made more clearances and blocks than the Northern Ireland international, and he has certainly proved himself in the top-flight again having not played there since Blackpool were relegated back in 2011.
