West Ham United are reportedly hopeful of beating defending league champions Chelsea to the signing of Argentina striker Jonathan Calleri.

The Hammers, who face Stoke City this afternoon, are understood to have made contact with the Boca Junior stars’ representatives in the attempt of thrashing out a deal for the forward in the New Year.

The 22-year-old, who has surprisingly failed to represent his country at any international level, scored a sensational 21 goals in 53 games in all competitions for the Argentine outfit last season.

With West Ham boss Slaven Bilic currently without attacking options Dimitri Payet, Manuel Lanzini, Victor Moses, Diafara Sakho and Enner Valencia due to injury; the Premier League club are working hard behind the scenes to beat Jose Mourinho’s Blues to the impressive forward’s signature next month.
