There was a time when the manager’s job at West Ham United was one of the most secure jobs in football.
This was a club who, right up until 1989, had only had five different managers in their entire history, but those days are long gone and even one bad result can put you on course for the sack, as current boss Slaven Bilic is finding out, with the latest reports claiming he could be replaced by Reading’s Jaap Stam following the recent loss to Bournemouth.
The Croat has endured a rollercoaster season which, in many ways, has disappointed after he took to the club to an impressive seventh placed finish and saw them pick up some inspiring wins last time out.
This season hasn’t quite gone according to plan though as the Hammers have struggled to find any real consistency, and that has now led to stories that Stam, who’s guided Reading to fifth in the Championship, could be in line to replace the 48-year-old at the London Stadium.
And, unsurprisingly, the news stimulated quite a response on social media, with several Hammers fans taking to Twitter to back their manager to turn things around at the club…
@westhamfantv So first it’s Mancini now it’s stam this is like our signing romours lacazette to bacca to hogan to no one. I think bilic should stay
