West Ham United have announced they have struck a deal to sign striker Jonathan Calleri on a season-long loan from Deportivo Maldonado.

The Premier League side, who visit Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in their 2016/17 top-flight opener on Monday night, have agreed a loan fee and personal terms with the Argentine forward and his Uruguayan parent club.

The 22-year-old, who scored for his country at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games this summer, will become the sixth Argentina star to feature for the Hammers – following in the footsteps of Lionel Scaloni, Javier Mascherano, Carlos Tevez, Mauro Zarate and current midfielder Manuel Lanzini.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic told the club’s official website, “We have agreed to sign Calleri.

“Unfortunately for him, but good for us, Argentina were knocked out of the Olympics this week, so he should be here with us pretty soon, depending on the work permit.

“We did the deal a little while ago, and he is a top striker. You need a squad, of course, but it is all about the balance. I think we have a good balance.”
