Name: Dimitri Payet
The £10.7m summer signing of Dimitri Payet looks to be a shrewd and brilliant piece of business by West Ham. Already a fans’ favourite, the Hammers supporters have been able to watch a player play the ‘West Ham way’ during their final season at Upton Park.
Several of the Claret and Blue fans from East London have compared Payet to some of the great footballers in their history, after only six months. Had it not been for a serious injury; ruling him out for seven matches, the attacking midfielder would no doubt have added to his six goals and four assists already. The Frenchman has been West Ham’s talisman, reflected by the Hammers’ poor form in the games he was absent – they won just once between 22 November and the end of 2015.
Comparisons have been made to Payet and other iconic heroes of yesteryear in East London, with the creative midfielder mentioned in the same bracket as Paolo Di Canio, Carlos Tevez and Trevor Brooking to name a few. He has certainly provided the fans with several memorable moments in their final season at the Boleyn Ground, as he played a starring role in impressive wins over Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
With West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium next year, they will be hoping that Payet stays to provide more magical moments to make it an equally memorable first season in their new home.
