What’s Hot and What’s Not as Everton and Bournemouth secure home wins on Tuesday

Everton came from behind to beat Arsenal and Bournemouth rose to eighth after an entertaining evening of Premier League action on Tuesday.

Ronald Koeman’s Toffees have struggled for form in recent weeks, losing three of their previous five matches, and looked set to struggle again when Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners ahead midway through the first half.

However, Koeman’s men grew into the contest and levelled just before half time when Seamus Coleman met Leighton Baines’ cross with a glancing header, before Ashley Williams completed the turnaround four minutes from time when he powered home a header from Ross Barkley’s corner.

It means that Everton move up to seventh in the table, while Arsene Wenger’s men missed the chance to go top of the pile, instead suffering their first away league defeat of the season.

Bournemouth made it three wins in five by beating champions Leicester 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium last night, the Foxes seventh away defeat of the season

The Cherries were good value for the lead given to them by Marc Pugh after 34 minutes, and only really came under siege from Claudio Ranieri’s side late on, with Artur Boruc smartly denying Leonardo Ulloa an equaliser in added time.

Nonetheless, the result moves Eddie Howe’s side up to a club-high eighth in the table, while Leicester remain just four points above the bottom three.

On what was an exciting night of Premier League football, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from Tuesday’s games…

HOT – James McCarthy and Everton

Yesterday’s comeback win for Everton over Arsenal was a massive victory for the club after a tricky few months.

Koeman’s men had won just one in ten prior to Tuesday’s game, but battled brilliantly to come from behind and defeat Wenger’s side.

In what was an excellent team effort in the second half, it was the performance of James McCarthy which was particularly impressive, given that he struggled to break into the side when Koeman first arrived at Goodison Park.

Nonetheless, alongside the excellent Idrissa Gueye, the Republic of Ireland international was outstanding for the Toffees, and will be a key player for them in the near future.

NOT – Arsenal

When Sanchez put the Gunners ahead after just 20 minutes, you sensed that Arsenal would build on that and stamp their authority on the game.

But they didn’t.

The visitors didn’t have another shot on target until the last knockings of the contest, and they allowed Everton to grow into the game and get the fans behind them.

Wenger will be disappointed to have given the hosts the impetus to get back into the game, and he’ll be more frustrated with the two goals they conceded, with both coming from balls into the box and finding the unmarked man.

A disappointing evening for the Gunners, and they’ll have to respond against Manchester City on Sunday.

HOT – Eddie Howe and Bournemouth

The remarkable story that is AFC Bournemouth just keeps motoring along.

The Cherries rose to eighth courtesy of a 1-0 win over champions Leicester on Tuesday, which is the highest league position ever occupied by the club in their 117-year history.

Marc Pugh’s first half strike was enough to see off the Foxes for a side that finished 21st in League Two just seven years ago.

It’s an incredible story, and one that manager Eddie Howe has been a massive part of, having taken over during that 2008/09 season and helping guide them to safety despite a 17-point deduction at the start of the campaign.

He deserves enormous credit for helping bring the club to the level they are at now.

NOT – Claudio Ranieri

Off the back of beating Manchester 4-2 and looking like last season’s Leicester, confidence must have been high in the Foxes camp going to the South Coast last night.

But their uninspiring performance suggested otherwise.

Their 1-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium was their seventh away loss of the season, and their eighth overall in the Premier League.

And, for the champions, that is simply not good enough.

Manager Claudio Ranieri said afterwards that the result was ‘too severe’ on his side, but in truth the Foxes only really got going when it was too late, and didn’t do enough to warrant a point.

The Italian must sort out their away form quickly if they are to start climbing the table.
