Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has surprised the club’s supporters by suggesting that he will not renew his contract.

The Spaniard’s current deal is due to expire in 2023, but the ex-Barcelona man has insisted that there is no time to think about an extension, as per The Manchester Evening News.

“If I extend the contract, it will be at the end of the next season,” Guardiola told Sky Sports after watching his side beat Wolves 5-1 on Wednesday.

“Before that is not going to happen. It is many years and I have to see how the team and ourselves are together.

“Knowing and saying I would stay for 10 more years but we have to take time for that.”

Guardiola will not renew his contract until his current deal expires next summer

Guardiola has enjoyed huge success during his time in Manchester, winning three Premier League titles and five domestic cups, but the Champions League has eluded him.

City looked set to reach the final this year when Riyad Mahrez added to their first leg lead over Real Madrid in the semis, but a late collapse sent the game to extra time and Karim Benzema scored a penalty to dump the Citizens out.

The Spaniard does look set to secure a fourth top flight English title this season, though, with his side currently sitting three points clear of Liverpool at the summit with two games remaining, meaning that they need just four points to lift the trophy.
