3 things Chelsea fans will take away from their FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham

Tactical genius

Many Chelsea fans were left surprised at 4:15pm when manager Conte announced the starting line-up, as star striker Diego Costa was left out of the eleven alongside Belgian winger Eden Hazard.

The duo have arguably been two of Chelsea’s best players this season, but the decision turned out to be a tactical masterstroke.

Willian started over Hazard and his first half brace proved to be vital for his side.

Hazard replaced Willian on the hour mark and Costa also came on for Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi, who was gifted a rare start in the Chelsea line-up. The duo made an immediate impact.

Not only did Hazard score the goal that put Chelsea back in the lead, but he also assisted Matic’s wonder-strike, proving why he is one of the hot favourites to win the PFA Player of the Season award for a second time.

It is not the first time Hazard has been specifically used as an impact substitute by the Blues, as during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Spurs in the league last season, Hazard was left on the bench at kick off.

Hazard was introduced at half time with his side 2-0 down and the Belgian also proved his capabilities to deliver in big matches by scoring the equaliser that famously won Leicester City the Premier League trophy last term.

Conte’s new approach clearly caught Spurs off guard and the tactical shuffle proved to be vital during Chelsea’s semi final triumph.
